Toute la [[matière]] est composée d&amp;#039;atomes dans divers configurations. Les atomes ont des [[proton]]s et des [[neutron]]s dans un noyau dense au centre, et des [[électron]]s dans les [[orbitale]]s autour du noyau. Chaque proton porte une [[charge]] positive de « +1 », chaque électron a une charge négative de « -1 », et les neutrons ne possèdent pas de charge (charge neutre - neutron). Les atomes d&amp;#039;un même élément ont tous le même nombre de protons, par définition, car &amp;#039;&amp;#039;les éléments sont définis par le nombre de protons qu&amp;#039;ils possèdent&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. L&amp;#039;attribution d&amp;#039;un nombre différent de neutrons dans le [[noyau]] n&amp;#039;affectera pas la charge de l&amp;#039;atome. Au lieu de cela, les isotopes différents ont une [[masse]] différente et des tendances différentes à la [[désintégration radioactive | désintégration radioactive]], ou au changement avec le temps.&lt;br /&gt;

Les isotopes différents ont des propriétés chimiques très similaires car la chimie est déterminée par la charge électrique. Cela rend la séparation chimique des isotopes très difficile. À titre d&amp;#039;exemple, l&amp;#039;[[hydrogène]] ne possède qu&amp;#039;un seul proton. Il existe trois isotopes de l&amp;#039;hydrogène dans la nature. L&amp;#039;isotope le plus courant est le [[protonium]], qui possède un proton et ne contient pas de neutrons. La deuxième forme la plus fréquente de l&amp;#039;hydrogène contient un proton et un neutron et s&amp;#039;appelle [[deutérium]]. Finalement, le [[tritium]] est la forme radioactive de l&amp;#039;hydrogène qui se trouve dans la nature, constituée d&amp;#039;un proton et de deux neutrons. Notez que toutes les trois formes d&amp;#039;hydrogène ne contient qu&amp;#039;un seul proton, ce qui est la caractéristique distinctive de l&amp;#039;hydrogène. Il existe de très légères différences chimiques en raison de ces variations. Les isotopes peuvent être &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;stables&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; ou &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;instables&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. Les isotopes instables sont ceux qui subissent une [[désintégration radioactive]] et, lors de ce processus, se transforment en d&amp;#039;autres éléments. Certains isotopes instables ont des [[demi-vie | demi-vies]] très courtes (moins d&amp;#039;une nanoseconde), tandis que d&amp;#039;autres en ont de très longues (des billions d&amp;#039;années). Les isotopes stables ne se désintègrent pas avec le temps et sont les isotopes les plus courants de tous les éléments.&lt;br /&gt;

Les isotopes du carbone seront un bon exemple pour illustrer ce point. Les isotopes courants du [[carbone]] comprennent le carbone 12, le carbone 13 et le carbone 14, souvent écrits comme &amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;12&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;C, &amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;13&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;C et &amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;14&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;C. Ces types d&amp;#039;atomes ont respectivement 6, 7 et 8 neutrons. Le &amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;12&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;C est l&amp;#039;isotope du carbone le plus courant dans la nature. Le &amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;14&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;C est connu pour son utilisation pour la datation radioactive archéologique, où l&amp;#039;on utilise sa [[demi-vie]].&lt;br /&gt;
