Mercury

Figure 1. This is liquid mercury. It is found as an element on the periodic table. It poses hazerdous if released into the environment and is very toxic to humans.

The term mercury is ambiguous and may refer to:

• Mercury (element): An element, just like oxygen or uranium, but it has many distinct properties and uses.
• Mercury (pollutant): A toxic pollutant, which in its elemental form or combined with other elements may build up in food chains and cause tremendous biological damage.
