The volt is the SI unit that measures voltage difference or potential difference. The symbol for volt is V. The volt can be thought of as a J/C because the voltage indicates how much energy would be gained by transporting a given amount of electric charge (in coulombs).
Some typical voltages include: 1.5 V on C, D, AA, and AAA batteries; 9 V on 9 V batteries and 120 V on North American electrical outlets.
